PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Skilled Trades Trainee position is offered through a specialized training stream under Civiconnect’s Youth Skills Studio (YSS) program. This program provides participants with the essential technical and soft skills that are needed to start a career in skilled trades.
This hands-on training program is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience and offers training in a variety of trades, including but not limited to carpentry, construction, and general machining. Trainees will develop core industry skills such as reading and interpreting technical drawings, safe equipment operation, and maintaining tools and machinery through hands-on experience and mentorship from industry professionals
Through a combination of structured workshops and hands-on learning, this program serves as a steppingstone for individuals looking to launch a career in skilled trades.
Timeline: September 22nd – December 19th, 2025 or September 8th – December 5th 2025
Wage: $22 per hour
Hours of Work: 33.5 - 35
Location: On-site at Employer facilities within Golden Horseshoe.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in mandatory technical and soft skills workshops to develop foundational trade knowledge and workplace competencies.
General Machining:
- Learn and assist with various machining tasks, including:
- Setting up and operating machining equipment (lathes, mills, and grinders) under professional supervision.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints to ensure precise machining of parts.
- Measuring and inspecting materials and finished components for quality and accuracy.
- Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of machinery.
- Monitoring production processes and identifying potential areas for improvement.
- Assisting with additional tasks as needed.
Carpentry:
- Learn and assist with various carpentry tasks, including:
- Operating woodworking machinery such as table saws, routers, and edge banders under professional supervision.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and cut lists.
- Measuring, cutting, sanding, and assembling wood components for carpentry production.
- Assisting with finishing techniques, including staining, painting, and sealing.
- Assisting in the fabrication and installation of custom cabinets and doors
- Inspecting finished products for quality and ensuring they meet specifications.
- Maintaining a clean and organized workspace and performing routine equipment maintenance.
- Assisting with additional tasks as needed.
Construction:
- Participate in mandatory technical and soft skills workshops to develop foundational trade knowledge and workplace competencies.
- Learn and assist with various construction tasks, including:
- Assisting in site preparation, material handling, and basic construction operations under professional supervision.
- Reading and interpreting construction drawings and site plans to support accurate work execution.
- Operating basic construction tools and equipment, such as drills, saws, and compactors, safely and effectively.
- Supporting framing, drywall installation, concrete work, flooring, insulation, roofing, window and door installation, painting, and other foundational construction tasks.
- Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized job site in accordance with safety regulations
WORKPLACE SAFETY & COLLABORATION
Follow strict safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to workplace regulations.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment to ensure safety and efficiency.
Work closely with industry professionals to develop technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Collaborate with team members to complete projects and meet production goals.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials or products.
- Required to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and use hand tools or machinery regularly.
Environmental Conditions:
- Work is conducted in a factory setting and/or construction site with exposure to dust and noise. It may involve both indoor and outdoor work as well as varying temperatures and weather conditions
- Proper safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel-toed boots, ear protection, dust masks, safety glasses, and gloves, will be provided and must be worn as required.
Health and Safety:
- Participants must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or mobility limitations to ensure proper accommodation and a safe working environment.
- Regular health and safety briefings will be conducted to ensure awareness of potential risks and the measures in place to mitigate them.
PROGRAMS / SOFTWARE USED:
- Microsoft Office Suite for record-keeping and reporting
- PayWorks for clocking in and out, tracking vacation, payroll, and storing essential employee records.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skill, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Effective communication and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
The YSS is an integrated learning environment, and no prior experience is required, though familiarity with machining or manufacturing processes is an asset.
Eligibility Requirements
Civiconnect receives government funding based on certain eligibility requirements. Please only apply if you meet the following criteria:
- Must be between 18-29 years of age
- Must be enrolled in part-time or full-time studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution with a co-op or internship.
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be able to work full-time for 12 weeks.
