In the quiet moments of November, the world comes together to remember. Remembrance Day, with its crimson poppies and hushed silences, bridges the gap between generations, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom. As we gather in collective remembrance, we honour their legacy and embrace the responsibility to ensure their stories endure. 

Originally known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day marked the end of World War I, the Great War that profoundly altered the course of nations. Canada, among the Allied powers, played a significant role in the war, contributing soldiers, resources, and unwavering determination. 

The origins of Remembrance Day trace back to the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when an armistice was signed, bringing an official end to one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. This day of remembrance, observed on November 11th each year, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers who fought valiantly during the war. Their courage and resilience in the face of adversity have become an integral part of our national identity.  

The war had a profound impact on Canada, transforming the nation in unimaginable ways. The influx of soldiers returning home led to societal shifts, giving rise to increased social awareness and demands for better living conditions. The war also paved the way for significant innovations in various fields. The pressing needs of the military encouraged scientific and technological advancements, leading to innovations like blood transfusions, and advancements in radio technology, medicine, and improved methods of agricultural production. These innovations not only revolutionized the medical and communication sectors but also contributed to Canada's economic growth and global standing. 

Moreover, the war fostered a sense of unity and national pride among Canadians. The shared experience of sacrifice and loss became a binding force, shaping the country's values of compassion and inclusivity. Remembrance Day, with its solemn ceremonies and symbolic poppies, became a means to honour the fallen, express gratitude to veterans, and educate future generations about the importance of peace and understanding. 

As we observe Remembrance Day in Canada, we pay homage to the bravery of those who served, acknowledging the profound impact of their sacrifices. Their legacy lives on not only in the rituals of remembrance but also in the innovative spirit that defines the nation. Costumes, Pumpkins, and Candy, Oh My!
It's that time of year again when ghosts roam freely, pumpkins glow warmly, and a sense of mystery fills the air – Halloween is finally here! This cherished holiday has undergone a spooktacular transformation over the past few decades, evolving from a tradition primarily enjoyed by children to becoming a beloved celebration in households all across Canada. 

But Halloween was not always such a haunting ordeal. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s, when Irish and Scottish immigrants came to Canada in the thousands, bringing with them their traditions and customs.  

The exact origins of Halloween are up for debate, but many believe that it derives from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. The Celtics believed the evening of October 31st marked the divide between the light and dark halves of the year when the boundary between the living and the dead was its thinnest, allowing all manners of ghosts, ghouls, and demons to run free in the land of the living. To protect against malevolent spirits, people would disguise themselves by wearing costumes and masks. As well as leave offerings, typically food, out to appease the spooky trespassers, who would otherwise bring bad luck to the home and community. 

In North America, the first instance of anyone dressing in disguise on Halloween was in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1898. The first recorded use of the iconic “trick or treat” was in a newspaper article in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1927.  

During our most recent All Hands Day the Learning and Development department gathered the whole team to carve pumpkins and most importantly, solve a murder. The night prior, a local pumpkin patch owner was found dead on his farm, clearly murdered in cold blood. With a host of suspects milling about the Civiconnect team had to put their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the test in determining who the killer was.  

Using several clues left at the crime scene, like an audio clip of the deceased talking to the murderer, a note in the victim's pocket, a photo of the perpetrator, and results from the crime scene investigation, the Civiconnect team discovered that the killer was the neighbour, Nigel Eastwood. Nigel was involved in a criminal enterprise. The beloved pumpkin patch owner discovered Nigel's dark secret, and to keep the truth from getting out, Nigel knew he had to silence his neighbour.

To kick off Cohort 8, the Marketing Associates participated in a mock project where participants were evaluated based on their ability to collaborate and create professional marketing presentations for fictional small businesses. Teams had to collaborate to complete market research, devise SEO strategies, on-page optimization, conduct website reviews, create social media strategies, and deliver a final presentation in front of a panel of judges, all within a tight two-week deadline. 

Throughout the competition, judges from the marketing department, including Sana Pabani (Senior Marketing Manager), Jules Fazio (Jr. Project Manager), Chardon Trimble-Kirk (Digital Marketing Supervisor), as well as Chris Megally (Client Success Manager), assessed the teams on the quality of their presentations, marketing tactics, social media content, overall effort, and their ability to respond to the judges' questions. 

Carina Kanaan and Khushi Handa emerged as the victors, securing the top spot with their exceptional research, strategy, and presentation for Sip & Style Home Décor, a fictitious home décor and furniture boutique with an in-store café.  

Despite being one of the smaller teams, Carina and Khushi worked together seamlessly to overcome challenges and creatively solve any obstacles that arose. They not only listened to feedback but also adapted to it. Their success can be attributed to their group's determination and outstanding teamwork.   

Carina is currently a Business Management student at Toronto Metropolitan University, specializing in entrepreneurship at the Ted Rogers School of Management. Marketing allows Carina to blend creativity with strategy, creating compelling narratives and experiences that resonate with audiences. She has consistently maintained her composure under pressure, enabling her to not only thrive but excel in the work environment by embracing learning opportunities at Civiconnect. 

Khushi is a third-year Bachelor of Business Administration student at Wilfrid Laurier University's Lazaridis School of Business and Economics. Her passion for marketing stems from its limitless potential for creativity and innovation within the field. Khushi has flourished at Civiconnect thanks to numerous enriching learning opportunities and initiatives available to her as a Marketing Associate. These initiatives, specifically designed to foster skill and knowledge growth, have had a significant impact on associates, shaping a highly skilled and proficient workforce at Civiconnect. 

Both Carina and Khushi tackled challenges with unwavering determination and effective teamwork. By working together and pooling their resources, both associates were able to overcome hurdles and emerge victorious. Supported by the exceptional team at Civiconnect, associates from all departments have continuously grown and elevated their skills. Civiconnect ensures that the journey of its associates is marked by achievements and fulfilment, empowering them to excel in their roles and make meaningful contributions to the workforce.
